This second floor addition and energy upgrade to the original 1st floor portion of the home was actually the third phase of construction for this project;
the second had been an addition in the back yard by another architect, and the challenge was to not only transform the livability and energy performance of a 50's ranch to meet today's standards,
but also integrate with the design of prior addition. Taking an angled wall from the new addition and extruding it through the original house's floor plan, and then vertically to the new second floor addition
unifies and clarifes the original and previous addition. Cladding was locally harvested beetle kill pine, pretreated and installed in a delicate rainscreen form gives the house a completely new street presence while
unifying the old.
